BREAKDANCE captures 1980s New York energy better than almost any watch of its time.

In September 1984, Swatch organized the first Swatch World Breakdance Championship at the legendary Roxy in New York City. This was visionary: breakdance was not yet corporate mainstream culture. It was underground, urban, energetic, rebellious.

Swatch understood early that the future customer was not in old jewelry stores alone. The future customer was in the street.
For the Swatch World Breakdance Championship, Haring designed the famous event poster and was closely tied to the creative atmosphere of the project.

While the BREAKDANCE model is Haring-inspired, it was actually first designed by someone else.
Marlyse Schmid and Bernard Müller were the original industrial/design creators of early Swatch identity in the early 1980s, and were also behind this famous design.
