The Swatch Solar system uses a built in photovoltaic cell that converts light into electrical energy, powering a quartz movement without the need for a standard disposable battery.
Energy is stored in a rechargeable cell, allowing the watch to continue running when away from light. Depending on charge level and condition, autonomy was typically designed to provide many hours of operation, generally around 100 to 200 hours when fully charged!
