Under request, Swatch imagined a watch for New York's underground nightlife.
The plan was simple: produce a special edition of just 500 pieces per colour for an underground party and sell it to the city's club crowd.
It never happened.
The watches weren't ready in time.
Instead, they quietly found their way into the hands of Swatch USA employees, creating one of the most elusive chapters in Swatch history.
Known today as the Velvet Underground, the GZ999 was unlike anything else in the catalogue. To capture the spirit of New York's underground club scene, Daniel J. Komar sourced fishnet hosiery from Swiss fashion house Fogal and had each watch individually wrapped and hand-stitched. The result was a vivid pink-dial Swatch unlike anything before or since, and one of the most unconventional creations ever produced by the brand.
Only a handful have survived in untouched condition.
Extremely rare piece.
